Part of my endometriosis healing protocol is to reduce or eliminate the use of products that have harmful ingredients. It can be a daunting task as that means replacing most products that I currently use at home. I am talking about household products and personal hygiene/beauty products. To make the process easier, I have decided to tackle 1 product at a time. So this week, I’ve researched natural alternatives to toothpaste.
I learned that the bad ingredients in commercial toothpastes are: fluoride, titanium dioxide, glycerin, sodium lauryl sulfate and artificial sweeteners.
I found this great site that lists 12 natural toothpaste alternatives:
So, I am going to try these 4 options from the above list:
- Sea salt: dissolve sea salt in water and then dip your toothbrush it the saltwater before brushing.
- Coconut oil: use like you would use a toothpaste. I am going to use a raw virgin cold pressed organic coconut oil.
- Baking soda: mix a bit of baking soda with a little water to form a paste then use like you would use a toothpaste.
- I also want to try oil pulling (done on an empty stomach): you swish about 1 tablespoon of oil (cold pressed sunflower or sesame oils are recommended but some people also use raw virgin cold pressed organic coconut oil) for 15 to 20 minutes in your mouth, then spit it all out (in the toilet and not in the sink). Rinse well with warm water. Then brush your teeth using just plain water. You can read more about oil pulling here oilpulling.com
